Why Safety Inside You Matters More Than Ever
Many times a day, we are taking in news and experiences that make our nervous systems respond, shouting “emergency, emergency!”
The world feels heavy, unpredictable, activating, unsettling, for many.
And yet, we’re all walking around trying to act normal - aiming to be “self-regulated,” to keep up and do our part, trying to show up for others.
But if you don’t feel safe in your own body, it’s hard to keep up and show up in the ways you want to.
It’s challenging to be as present as you want to be. It’s hard to stay clear and grounded in your being, leadership, caregiving, and daily life when your body is constantly bracing for impact.
You can grow your own sense of safety
This week, inside the Roots of Resilience Collective, we explored something essential: how we relate to safety within ourselves and how external chaos often shapes our internal experience - without us even being aware of it.
We also looked at how essential it is to build safety within, even more when the world outside feels less safe and predictable.
Members reflected on how much the uncertainty in the world has been shaping their nervous system responses, making it harder to feel safe, even in moments of personal calm.
For some, it was powerful to notice how rarely they felt deeply safe in their bodies, and how much they are on chronic alert.
For others, there was relief in realizing that they could intentionally cultivate moments of safety and steadiness, even amidst uncertainty.
For others, creating the feeling of inner safety helped them to connect with exactly what their body, mind and heart needed in this time.
When we create small, intentional shifts – a few minutes of attunement, a few breaths, a deep pause to connect – we don’t just feel better. We think better, we act better, and we can show up differently.
We move with steadiness instead of holding back in fear.
We make clear and aligned decisions.
We engage with the world from a place of deep presence rather than exhaustion.
I'd love to hear from you.
What’s keeping you on alert?
What’s the state of your nervous system these days?
What kind of support are you wanting right now to feel more inner safety?
What difference would it make to experience more inner safety?
Your body is always listening. The way you tend to it matters.
The more safety you build inside yourself, the more capacity you have to meet whatever life brings.
The world needs you well.
With love and many blessings,
Kelly
